Phoenix matched up with the Chicago Blackhawks in the opening round of the playoffs. They defeated the Blackhawks in six games, notching the franchise's first playoff series win since 1987. The first five games went to overtime, tying a record when the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs accomplished the same feat in the 1951 Stanley Cup Final.
The Coyotes and their fans were excited to be in the second round of the playoffs as they took on a worthy opponent in the Nashville Predators. The Coyotes eliminated the Predators in five games, allowing the franchise to advance to its first Conference Final. The Coyotes would fall to the Los Angeles Kings in five games. The Coyotes gave their fans one wild ride in the playoffs this past season, but with several key departures on offense, can the Coyotes make another trip to the playoff. The Phoenix Coyotes were able to sign their captain Shane Doan to a four year contract extension to allow him to finish his career with the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise.
