The New York Islanders had another disappointing season. The New York Islanders have not made the playoffs since 2004, and are not showing signs of making the playoffs anytime soon. However, that has not stopped the Islanders management in acquiring and drafting talent they believe will bring the Islanders back to the playoffs and restore the winning culture that once engulfed Long Islander during the 1980s. The one bright spot for the Islanders was John Tavares. Tavares had a break out year, scoring 31 goals and 50 assists, tallying 81 points, seventh best in the league. Tavares played in the All Star Game where he scored a goal and tallied an assist. Matt Moulson also had a strong season, finishing with career highs with 36 goals, 33 assists, 69 points.
Despite all the struggles on the Island, Tavares was named assistant captain of the team and he is improving as a player each year in the NHL. The Islanders finished 26th in the league, earning the right to pick 4th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, selecting defenseman Griffin Reinhart. He will be joining the rest of the Islanders as the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island. The Nassau Coliseum is one of the oldest venues in the NHL, and Islanders have been looking to upgrade their arena for quite some time now. The team is hoping for a new arena to be built in Nassau County so their fans will not have far to travel to watch the team play.
