The New Orleans Saints have been tagged as the second coming of the “Greatest Show on Turf,” because of their quarterback Drew Brees. Coming into this season Brees had not signed a new contract and had threatened to hold out and not report to training camp if a new contract was not signed. Brees and the Saints came to an agreement signing the veteran quarterback to a five year deal worth 0 million. This will make the face of the franchise a Saint for life.
Brees earned his contract by breaking the single season passing record held for over 25 years by Dan Marino. With Brees leading the Saints offense, the team finished with a record of 13-3 winning the NFC South. In the first round of the playoffs against Detroit Lions, the Saints tied the NFL's postseason mark for team first downs in a game (34), and broke the record for total yards with 626, eclipsing the yardage record set 49 years ago. The Saints lost a heartbreaking game in the Divisional Round to the San Francisco 49ers last season.
Despite all these accomplishments last season, the Saints were rocked with a scandal over the off-season entitled “Bounty-Gate.” The NFL investigated the Saints pay for performance program under the “Bounty Rule” and found that 22 to 27 defensive players under then defensive coordinator Gregg Williams during the 2009-2011 seasons administered in a bounty program. The Saints, who flourished so well under head Sean Payton, will have to do without his services for the whole 2012 season. Assistant Coach Joe Vitt was suspended the first six games and general Managers Mickey Loomis was suspended eight games for their role in ‘Bounty Gate.”
The Saints will still be contenders this year even though they lost key players due free agency or suspension because of “Bounty Gate.” The Saints have good young talent on offense that can put up points on every possession look for the Saints to be still in the hunt for the division this year. The Saints along with their fans are going rally behind their suspended players and coaches to prove to the rest of the NFL that they are still one of the best teams in the league. Nothing is going to stop them from reaching ultimate goal.
