Washington Nationals Baseball Tickets

Since moving to the nation’s capital in 2005, the Washington Nationals have failed to finish out of last place in the rough and tumble NL East. In 2010, they won only 69 games while losing 93, marking the third worst record in the entire National League. Despite the lack of recent success, there's reason to think the Nationals will take a step in the right direction in 2011.

All Star third baseman Ryan Zimmerman returns at the hot corner, and speed demon Nyjer Morgan is back in center field. Added in the offseason were outfielders Jayson Werth and Rick Ankiel, along with home run hitting first baseman Adam LaRoche, and the middle of the infield features the up-and-coming duo of Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa. The pitching staff is also young and promising, giving Nationals fans reason to hope for the first time years.

National League East

The National League East was the best division in the MLB National League in 2010. What used to be the Atlanta Braves playground, the NL East has been dominated by the Philadelphia Phillies the past four years, and they captured the division crown again in 2010, winning 97 games, and eventually losing to the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS. The Braves also made the playoffs as the Wild Card, making the NL East the only team in the National League to have two teams in the postseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies, who play their home games at Citizens Bank Park, have won four straight division titles, but there once potent offense took some hits in the offseason. Jayson Werth is no longer roaming the outfield, and All-Star second baseman Chase Utley is dealing with a debilitating knee injury that could keep him for an extended period of time, possibly the entire season. What they lost in offensive firepower they more than made up for it on the mound, adding Cliff Lee in the offseason. He'll join Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt to form the far and away the best pitching staff in Major League Baseball. After pacing the division for 11 straight seasons, the Atlanta Braves hadn't hosted a postseason game at Turner Field since 2006 prior to last year. Gone is long-time manager Bobby Cox, but with an infusion of youth that includes Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman and Brandon Beachy, along with the addition of slugging second baseman Dan Uggla, the Braves look primed to seriously challenge the Phillies.

The New York Mets haven't found much success since moving to CitiField in 2009, but they still possess plenty of talent in David Wright, Jose Reyes, Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran, which will give them a shot at sneaking into the playoffs in 2011. The key will be the pitching staff, which figures to be without Johan Santana for much the season. The Florida Marlins have surrendered completely to the youth movement, parting ways with Dan Uggla, and creating full-time roles for Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison. They also added Javier Vazquez to their pitching rotation in the offseason, and though they're not considered in the top tier of NL East teams, could very well surprise the fans packed into Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. The Washington Nationals won only 69 games in 2010, finishing in last place in the division for the fifth time in six seasons. Phenom Stephen Strasburg blew out his arm at the end of the year, and will miss most, if not all of the 2011 season, giving the Nationals little chance to improve upon their bottom-feeding standing in the NL East.

2011 National League

The 2011 Major League Baseball Season is officially underway, and the play in the National League has been as competitive and exciting as expected. Sporting the best pitching staff in all of baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies have jumped out to an early lead in the NL East division, where they are trailed closely by the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The New York Mets got off to a slow start, but have been much better recently, and the Washington Nationals have shown steady improvement.

In the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals are currently the cream of the crop, but there are four teams all within three games of each other. The Milwaukee Brewers have been a dominant offense, and with the impending return of Zack Greinke, should have a dominant pitching staff as well. Last year's division winners, the Cincinnati Reds, have struggled at times, but have the best hitter in the NL on their side in Joey Votto. And don't forget about the Chicago Cubs! While not a true contender for the division crown, the Cubs have an exciting team that's much better than their record indicates. Rounding out the NL Central are the improving Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros.

In the NL West, the Colorado Rockies have compiled the best record in MLB, and the Los Angeles Dodgers look like the team who reached the NLCS two years ago. Last season's World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, have gotten off to a rough start, but are still considered top contenders, and the San Diego Padres continue to outperform expectations.

The National League has captured three of the past five World Series titles, highlighted by last year's dominant run by the San Francisco Giants. They'll look to build on their advantage over the American League in 2011, as several teams, including the Giants, have a realistic shot to call themselves the best team in Major League Baseball.

The Giants, who play in beautiful AT&T Park, return virtually everyone from last season squad, but that won't ensure even a division title, as the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers look to present serious challenges in the NL West division. And if they do make it out of the NL West gauntlet, they'll be forced to matchup in the playoffs with a slew of talented teams, none more so than the Philadelphia Phillies of the NL East division. The strength of the Phillies has long been hitting home runs out of Citizens Bank Park, but 2011 will be different, as they've assembled a murderer's row of starting pitchers. Down in Atlanta, GA, the Atlanta Braves will rely on several uber-talented youngsters to get them back to the playoffs. In the NL Central, the Milwaukee Brewers made a couple of impact moves in the offseason, and now have a stacked roster, both on offense and defense, while the Cincinnati Reds are in a great position to repeat as NL Central champs.

With such a wide-open race, the National League is sure to provide plenty of excitement and hard-fought Major League Baseball in 2011.

May 2011 - National League Update

The Major League Baseball 2011 Season is more than a quarter of the way over, and the playoff races are already heating up. In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies are the cream of the crop, thanks to one of the most dominant pitching staffs ever assembled. The offense has started to wake up of late, as well, which could prove to be a combination that no team can compete with. The Phillies lead the NL East division by one game over the surprise Florida Marlins, while the Atlanta Braves, a wildcard team a season ago, are in third, three games out. The New York Mets have struggled in all areas of the game, but are only two games under .500, still within striking distance. Bringing up the rear, as they usually do, are the Washington Nationals.

The defending World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, are again out in front in the NL West division despite suffering a few catastrophic injuries to their offense. As long as the pitching staff continues to perform at an elite level, it seems the Giants will continue to be contenders for another World Series title. Surprisingly, last year’s cellar-dweller, the Arizona Diamondbacks are in second place, while the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers are still well within striking distance. The San Diego Padres, who desperately miss Adrian Gonzalez's bat, are in last, eight games behind the Giants.

The NL Central was expected to be one of the most competitive divisions in baseball, and so far it’s lived up to the billing. The St. Louis Cardinals currently hold a two game lead, but the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds are breathing down their neck. All three squads have an excellent balance of pitching and hitting, and all three are worthy of representing the National League in the World Series. Chicago Cubs fans continue to come out to Wrigley Field despite the Cubs sub-par record, while the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros round out the bottom three teams in the NL Central.

NL East June Update
The Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in the National League by a wide margin, and have a multiple game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East division. The Phillies are led by the best pitching staff in Major League Baseball, which features Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels. The Braves have some young pitchers of their own, and a very potent offense. They may not be able to catch the Phillies in the NL East, but they've proven they'll be a contender for the Wild Card all season. The Washington Nationals lost their manager in June, but they've been one of the hottest teams in the National League of late, pushing them into third place in the division. The New York Mets have also been playing better baseball in June, while the Florida Marlins have gone in the other direction, at one point losing nearly 20 games in a row.

NL East July Update

The Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in Major League Baseball. Mostly that’s because they have the best pitching staff in the game, but now that the team added Hunter Pence in a trade, the offense is also one of the most feared. They currently have a significant lead in the NL East, and are all but assured a spot in the postseason. The Atlanta Braves actually have the second best record in the National League, but because they are so far behind the Phillies, they will likely have to settle for the NL Wildcard. The New York Mets dealt Carlos Beltran, but they got back star third baseman David Wright, and are actually playing much better ball of late. Same goes for the Florida Marlins, who have performed admirably under new manager Jack McKeon. Bring up the rear, as always, are the Washington Nationals. On the bright side for Nationals fans – pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg is expected to return to the rotation sometime at the end of August!
