After capturing consecutive NL West division titles in 2005 and 2006, the San Diego Padres suffered through a couple of disappointing seasons before bouncing back in 2010, compiling 90 wins against only 72 losses.
Unfortunately, that record wasn't quite good enough to get them back to the playoffs, as eventual World Series champs the San Francisco Giants beat them out by a measly two games.
Although they lost super star Adrian Gonzalez in the offseason, the team added solid pieces like Jason Bartlett, Brad Hawpe and Orlando Hudson to go along with up-and-coming youngsters like Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin and Will Venable. The pitching staff will again be a strong suit, with ace in the making Mat Latos headlining a deep and experienced group.
National League West Division
The National League West division produced two 90 win teams in 2010, and four squads who won 80 games. It also featured eventual World Series champs the San Francisco Giants. Not bad for what used to be considered one of the weakest divisions in Major League Baseball.
Thanks to dominant pitching and timely hitting, the San Francisco Giants marched their through the playoffs, eventually dispatching of the Texas Rangers in World Series. All the key components will be present in AT&T Park this season, including Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Buster Posey, making the Giants the odds-on favorite to repeat as NL West division champs. The San Diego Padres are coming off their best season since 1998, but they lost their best player, and one of the most potent bats in the league in Adrian Gonzalez, raising serious doubts they'll be able to repeat the success of 2010.
The Colorado Rockies play in incredibly hitter-friendly Coors Field, and their offense is built to take advantage of the thin air. Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez are both MVP candidates, and player like Jose Lopez, Todd Helton and Ian Stewart will provide plenty of support. If the pitching staff can keep the ball on the ground and out of the stands on a consistent basis, the Rockies will present a serious challenge to the Giants for the NL West division crown.
The Los Angeles Dodgers won the division in 2009, and they possess an exciting offense to go along with a solid pitching staff that benefits from an expansive home park, Dodger Stadium. If new manager Don Mattingly can keep them focused, Los Angeles could be as good as any team in the NL West. The Arizona Diamondbacks are coming off a very down year, and they're in the process of revamping their roster. While they should provide the home crowd at Chase Field with more to cheer about in 2011, the Diamondbacks are not expected to pose a serious threat to the Giants, Rockies and Dodgers.
2011 National League
The 2011 Major League Baseball Season is officially underway, and the play in the National League has been as competitive and exciting as expected. Sporting the best pitching staff in all of baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies have jumped out to an early lead in the NL East division, where they are trailed closely by the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The New York Mets got off to a slow start, but have been much better recently, and the Washington Nationals have shown steady improvement.
In the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals are currently the cream of the crop, but there are four teams all within three games of each other. The Milwaukee Brewers have been a dominant offense, and with the impending return of Zack Greinke, should have a dominant pitching staff as well. Last year's division winners, the Cincinnati Reds, have struggled at times, but have the best hitter in the NL on their side in Joey Votto. And don't forget about the Chicago Cubs! While not a true contender for the division crown, the Cubs have an exciting team that's much better than their record indicates. Rounding out the NL Central are the improving Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros.
In the NL West, the Colorado Rockies have compiled the best record in MLB, and the Los Angeles Dodgers look like the team who reached the NLCS two years ago. Last season's World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, have gotten off to a rough start, but are still considered top contenders, and the San Diego Padres continue to outperform expectations.
May 2011 - National League Update
The Major League Baseball 2011 Season is more than a quarter of the way over, and the playoff races are already heating up. In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies are the cream of the crop, thanks to one of the most dominant pitching staffs ever assembled. The offense has started to wake up of late, as well, which could prove to be a combination that no team can compete with. The Phillies lead the NL East division by one game over the surprise Florida Marlins, while the Atlanta Braves, a wildcard team a season ago, are in third, three games out. The New York Mets have struggled in all areas of the game, but are only two games under .500, still within striking distance. Bringing up the rear, as they usually do, are the Washington Nationals.
The defending World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, are again out in front in the NL West division despite suffering a few catastrophic injuries to their offense. As long as the pitching staff continues to perform at an elite level, it seems the Giants will continue to be contenders for another World Series title. Surprisingly, last year’s cellar-dweller, the Arizona Diamondbacks are in second place, while the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers are still well within striking distance. The San Diego Padres, who desperately miss Adrian Gonzalez's bat, are in last, eight games behind the Giants.
The NL Central was expected to be one of the most competitive divisions in baseball, and so far it’s lived up to the billing. The St. Louis Cardinals currently hold a two game lead, but the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds are breathing down their neck. All three squads have an excellent balance of pitching and hitting, and all three are worthy of representing the National League in the World Series. Chicago Cubs fans continue to come out to Wrigley Field despite the Cubs sub-par record, while the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros round out the bottom three teams in the NL Central.
NL West June Update
The San Francisco Giants are the defending World Series champions, and after getting off to a rocky start early in the year, they're finally playing like it. Behind the pitching of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, the Giants have separated from themselves from the pack a bit in the NL West division. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the closest team to the Giants in the standings, and they actually held the NL West lead for much of the month of June. The Colorado Rockies sit in third place, but they are a notorious late-charging team, so as they long as they continue to hang around .500, they could make a serious push for a playoff spot down the stretch. The Los Angeles Dodgers have experienced an up-and-down season, but they may have the best offensive player currently in baseball in Matt Kemp, while the San Diego Padres have really struggled of late, and find themselves in the basement of the NL West division.
NL West July Update
The San Francisco Giants are the defending World Series champs, and they currently have a small lead over the surprise Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. After adding Carlos Beltran and Jeff Keppinger at the Trade Deadline, the Giants are poised to make another run deep into the MLB Playoffs. Although if Kirk Gibson’s Diamondbacks keep playing at their current level, the NL West could have a new division champ by the time September concludes. The Colorado Rockies are currently 10 games back, but they are notorious for closing strong, so nobody should count out Troy Tulowitzki and the Rockies – even without Ubaldo Jimenez. The Los Angeles Dodgers have experienced one of the most frustrating seasons in franchise history, and despite Matt Kemp’s MVP caliber play, find themselves barely out of last place in the division. That distinction actually goes to the San Diego Padres, who are currently rebuilding their team after the Adrian Gonzalez trade.
