National League Central Division

The NL Central is the only division in Major League Baseball to have six teams, making it one of the most difficult divisions to win on a yearly basis. The Cincinnati Reds shocked everyone by pacing the group with 91 wins in 2010, with the favored St. Louis Cardinals finishing a distant second.

Staff ace Adam Wainwright has already been lost for the season, and Pujols is in the midst of a contentious contract dispute, that could end up negatively affecting the team, and its home crowd at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals anticipated struggles could open the door for the Milwaukee Brewers to rise to the top of the division. The Brewers, who play at beautiful Miller Park, were extremely busy in the offseason, making deals to acquire Zach Greinke, Shaun Marcum, Nyjer Morgan and Yuniesky Betancourt. Combine those guys with established All-Stars like Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Yovani Gallardo, and it's easy to see why many are projecting Milwaukee to be in the playoffs for only the second time since 1982.

The Houston Astros, who call Minute Maid Park home, and the Chicago Cubs, who play at historic Wrigley Field, finished fourth and fifth in the NL Central last season, and neither figures to be serious contenders in 2011. The Cubs have more of a chance, but it'll require their roster to stay completely healthy and productive, something their aging roster hasn't been able to do in recent seasons. The Pittsburgh Pirates finished with the worst record in baseball last season, and despite the presence of up-and-coming youngsters like Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker and Jose Tabata, 2011 doesn't figure to be much better, as the Pirates have perhaps the worst pitching rotation in the league. On the bright side, PNC Park is one of the best places to catch a game in all of MLB.

2011 National League

The 2011 Major League Baseball Season is officially underway, and the play in the National League has been as competitive and exciting as expected. Sporting the best pitching staff in all of baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies have jumped out to an early lead in the NL East division, where they are trailed closely by the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The New York Mets got off to a slow start, but have been much better recently, and the Washington Nationals have shown steady improvement.

In the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals are currently the cream of the crop, but there are four teams all within three games of each other. The Milwaukee Brewers have been a dominant offense, and with the impending return of Zack Greinke, should have a dominant pitching staff as well. Last year's division winners, the Cincinnati Reds, have struggled at times, but have the best hitter in the NL on their side in Joey Votto. And don't forget about the Chicago Cubs! While not a true contender for the division crown, the Cubs have an exciting team that's much better than their record indicates. Rounding out the NL Central are the improving Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros.

In the NL West, the Colorado Rockies have compiled the best record in MLB, and the Los Angeles Dodgers look like the team who reached the NLCS two years ago. Last season's World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, have gotten off to a rough start, but are still considered top contenders, and the San Diego Padres continue to outperform expectations.

May 2011 - National League Update

The Major League Baseball 2011 Season is more than a quarter of the way over, and the playoff races are already heating up. In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies are the cream of the crop, thanks to one of the most dominant pitching staffs ever assembled. The offense has started to wake up of late, as well, which could prove to be a combination that no team can compete with. The Phillies lead the NL East division by one game over the surprise Florida Marlins, while the Atlanta Braves, a wildcard team a season ago, are in third, three games out. The New York Mets have struggled in all areas of the game, but are only two games under .500, still within striking distance. Bringing up the rear, as they usually do, are the Washington Nationals.

The defending World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, are again out in front in the NL West division despite suffering a few catastrophic injuries to their offense. As long as the pitching staff continues to perform at an elite level, it seems the Giants will continue to be contenders for another World Series title. Surprisingly, last year’s cellar-dweller, the Arizona Diamondbacks are in second place, while the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers are still well within striking distance. The San Diego Padres, who desperately miss Adrian Gonzalez's bat, are in last, eight games behind the Giants.

The NL Central was expected to be one of the most competitive divisions in baseball, and so far it’s lived up to the billing. Not to be outdone by their American League counterparts, the Philadelphia Phillies have assembled perhaps the greatest pitching rotation of all-time, but even that may not be enough to hold off the up-and-coming Braves in the NL East. Expectations are also very high in a pair of cities that haven't had a reason to be excited in a long time. Cincinnati, OH and Milwaukee, WI are home to the NL Central's Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers, and both teams feel they have as complete a roster as any in the league. And who could forget the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Powered by an elite pitching staff, and complementary offense, fans will be packing AT&T stadium on a nightly basis to see if their hometown boys can do the unthinkable and repeat in 2011.

The Reds won the NL Central division in 2010, and after struggling early in June, have righted the ship, and again look like serious contenders to win the Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in fourth place, and continue to flirt with a .500 record, which would be their first in 18 years. Bringing up the rear are the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. The Cubs have been swinging the bats better of late, so maybe there's hope. The Astros currently have the worst record in the MLB.

The NL Central has as hotly contested a division race as you’re ever going to find, with as many as four teams still in contention for what figures to be one playoff spot. The Milwaukee Brewers are currently the cream of the crop, and with the addition of Francisco Rodriguez to their bullpen, are the prohibitive favorites. The St. Louis Cardinals have been beset by injuries, but they continue to chug along, and currently sit in second. The surprise team in the midst of the NL Central race are the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have gotten surprising pitching performances from all of their starters this year, and the offense continues to make strides. While they probably don’t have enough experience or firepower to keep pace with the Brewers and Cardinals, Pirates fans have to be ecstatic about how their team has fared in 2011. The darkhorse team is also last year’s NL Central champion, the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds starting pitchers have severely disappointed this year, but the offense is high-powered enough to think the Reds are capable of making a run over the final two months. Bring up the rear are the lowly Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.
