The Sunflower state is the home of the often time top ranked Kansas University Jayhawks, having won the National Championship recently the Jayhawks continue to be the states marquis performer. Many people often times confuse Kansas City as being entirely in the state of Kansas which is not true as the larger part of Kansas City is actually in the state of Missouri. The state of Kansas, also known as the “Sunflower State” has one of the most storied histories in college basketball with the Kansas University Jayhawks. The Jayhawks have provided a sense of state pride, success and rivalry for other mid-west schools. Fans can catch a Kansas basketball game in Lawrence, Kansas which is about 40 minutes east of Kansas City. Allen Fieldhouse, which is named after former KU coach Phog Allen is the home to top ranked Jayhawks.

Kansas State Wildcats

If you travel south of Kansas City to Manhattan you can find one of the Jayhawks biggest rivals in the Kansas State Wildcats. The Wildcats also have a history of success in the sport department, but it is a Football story. While the Kansas State Football fans haven’t been in a rebuilding process, they still continue to have the marquis college football team in the state of Kansas.

Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs

One of the biggest misunderstandings about the geography of the eastern side of the state is that Kansas City in only in Kansas. While it might seem like an obvious assumption, the truth is that the majority of Kansas City is in Missouri, and so are the 2 professional sports teams with Kansas City in their names. The Kansas City Royals and Chiefs both share stadiums in the same complex. The Kansas City Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium and the Royals play across the parking lot at Kaufman Stadium, which is also known as “The K”. Both Kansas City teams have struggled over the years as the lack of a salary cap in MLB baseball has caused the Royals to lack the population base and salary needs that now seem to be associated with winning in the MLB. Although the Royals have struggled they are in the midst of what seems to be a never-ending rebuilding process for area fans. Despites the teams struggles the voters of Jackson County Missouri voted for stadium renovations for both the Chiefs and the Royals.

Sprint Center

The Kansas City area has been without an NBA team since the 1980’s when the Kansas City Kings left the city in favor of Sacramento. In an effort to attract more large scale entertainment and possibly a third professional sports team, Kansas City has added the Sprint Center to the downtown area of KC. The Sprint Center has been a big hit downtown and has played host to numerous large concerts, the Big 12 tournament and also sporting events too. Despite the state of the art facility the Kansas City area has yet to attract another professional sports team.

Sandstone Amphitheater – Bonner Springs

The outdoor amphitheater is also known as Capital Federal Amphitheater. The open air theater first opened in 1984 and it has been hosting Kansas City area summer concerts ever since. Bonner Springs is a popular stop for most major touring acts and festivals.
