One Direction first to rose to prominence on the British television show The X Factor, where they placed third in the seventh season of the show. Made up of Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, the British-Irish boy band was signed to Simon Cowell’s record label originally, but have since switched to Columbia Records.
The group debuted smashingly in the fall of 2011, with their first single “What Makes You Beautiful” peaking at number one in the UK. Their first album, Up All Night, debuted at number two in the UK, and was the fastest-selling debut album in 2011. The album was released in the US in March of 2012, debuting at number one on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart.
The immense and sudden popularity of the band has reminded people of the Spice Girls, and their first U.S. tour, which is set to kick off at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia on May 24. During the tour they’ll be playing in cities such as New York (Beacom Theatre), Detroit (Fox Theatre), and Chicago (Allstate Arena). The tour will wrap up in Miami at Bank Atlantic Center July 1.
