Arctic Monkeys is an English Alternative rock band that dabbles in post-punk and psychedelic rock. The group is currently made up of Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals) and John Ashton as a touring member (keyboard, guitar, backing vocals).
Arctic Monkeys' debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released in 2006 and became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history. The band has released two subsequent albums -- Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) and Humbug (2009) -- and is in studio working on their fourth release, expected to hit stores sometime in 2011.
In addition to being one of the more popular bands on the alt-rock scene, Arctic Monkeys is also credited as being one of the first mainstream acts to come to popularity via the Internet. Shunning record company deals, as well as marketing and advertising, Arctic Monkey ushered in a new way for bands to be promoted.
After the 2009 release of Humbug, Arctic Monkeys embarked on the first leg of the worldwide tour, going on to headline 2009's Reading and Leeds Festivals. The tour concluded in April of 2010.
